The Hobbit Premiere, 12/12/12: The day started off on a bit of a sour note, with me not getting up to be there at 7am like planned; I’d set my alarm but never switched it to the ‘on’ position, ugh. (But it ended on a high note with Martin Freeman winking at my friends and I as he was signing my Sherlock book) So I woke up at 10:30 instead, and my friend and I had gotten there at 11:30 or so. They were still setting up everything, and we didn’t really see many people there, so we sat for about 10-15 minutes until we heard some screaming and an announcement of letting people in somewhere.

So, this happened today.

I met Mark Gatiss, Steven Moffat, and Sue Virtue (Sue was by happenstance) today at a book signing for Sherlock: The Casebook.  I got to the store at about 9am, it opened at 9:45am, and my friend and I were about 5-6th in line. Okay, cool. So within less than 10 minutes they let us inside, and we formed a queue near where the signing was going to be, and we waited there, talked to fellow fans, made some new friends, etc etc.

Mark was the first to arrive, just right in the front door, where everyone was waiting - see, this is what I’ve come to learn about the UK versus the US: if we see someone famous, depending on who it is, out here they respect the person’s privacy and personal space for the most part, and nobody screamed or shouted, we just admired from afar. Steven was next to arrive, about twenty minutes later, and the same thing occurred, we were quiet and admiring from afar; he looked down at us, made eye contact with me and my friends in our section for a bit and I didn’t know what else to do except smile awkwardly.

Then Sue came in, all by herself about five minutes later. Mark and Steven were accompanied by someone. She came around near us, looking for them, but we’re like “They went upstairs,” She pointed upwards and went, “Up there?” and we all said, “Yeah, upstairs.” and then she just made her little way up the stairs and we all stared at each other, saying “That…just happened, didn’t it?”

Then the time came, and it was fairly quick since the signing was only about an hour, and they were both at a table while Sue was off to the side by some books. The girl who we made friends with in front of us, was thanking them that from Doctor Who and Sherlock she’s made so many friends, and was thanking them both, and Mark being lovely, said something along the lines of it being fantastic, and Steven being Steven said, “So we’re responsible for your entire social life, are we?” and then I was up there getting my book signed by Mark as this happened, and I’d said, “Yeah, I’m pretty sure it’s like that for a lot of people,” and I just laughed it off. They were both wonderful, for it being so short, and Steven couldn’t stop making things up after what that girl had said so I didn’t really get a word in, and Steven’s like, “I’m so sorry, it’s lovely to meet you,” and I said, “No, no it’s totally okay, thank you,” smiled, and then left and made my way over to Sue. Everyone was going up to her, naturally, and one of the workers said, “Do we need to get you your own table too?” as a joke. But Sue was fantastic and lovely as well. Then after the signing, we popped over to Speedy’s considering the signing was on Gower Street, and it made the day complete.
